OK, I’m going to let you in on a secret. I have watched You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan lots of times. I’m not going to say how many times, because I actually don’t know. But it is a lot! And everyone knows the exchange between their characters (okay, Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly... yes, I know the names) about business:
Joe Fox: It wasn't... personal. Kathleen Kelly: What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn't personal to you. But it was personal to me. It's personal to a lot of people. And what's so wrong with being personal, anyway? I’m going to tell you that yes, most of the time it is business. But sometimes things hit home a little too closely. Sometimes you do take things personally. And it hurts.

Sometimes things can’t wait. You’ve got to take action because waiting around for help might possibly make things worse or, at the very least, make problems stick around longer than they need to.
I recently had one of those "gotta do it" moments. Sometimes when the shit is going down you really only have yourself. No one is going to save you, help you, do the work, make things better or kiss your boo boos. So what do you do to get through it?
It’s 8:44am right now. I’ve gotten some “me” time, showered, worked for an hour, spent an hour at PT and grabbed myself some Starbucks.
If you’re still in bed, you have missed out on A LOT of your day. A long, long, time ago, in this galaxy, we used to answer the phone. (We only had one phone per family back in the olden days.) Because we had no idea who was calling. And honestly, it was exciting to hear the phone ring. You had to run faster than your siblings to grab the receiver from the wall, and find out who was on the other end. And it was a complete joy to know it was for YOU, and you smugly glared at your sisters as you stretched the phone cord into the other room for some private chat with your friend.
Those days are gone, and now it seems the phone call is no longer your friend. Or anyone's friend. |
